Manchester City have confirmed that midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has tested positive for Covid-19.
Their time in quarantine is now over, but another of their players has contracted the virus, with Gundogan now set for a 10-day period of self-isolation.
It means he will definitely miss City’s opener of the Premier League season against Wolves on Monday night.
Mahrez is back in contention for the match, but Laporte did not get back to training soon enough to be considered for a place.
“Riyad came back three or four days ago and is training,” Guardiola said on Friday. “Today is the first day Aymeric is back. Mahrez is available for Wolves, Laporte not yet.”
Gundogan will have to watch on from home, as he undergoes his recovery from the virus. The club statement did not make it clear whether he was displaying symptoms or not.
Gundogan could miss four games
City’s EFL Cup game against Bournemouth and first Premier League home game of the new campaign against Leicester also fall in the 10-day period in which Gundogan will have to isolate.
Depending on how quickly he returns to training, there is a chance he could also miss their clash with Leeds at the start of next month.
The German midfielder has been at City since 2016, but injuries have frequently disrupted his progress.
His gametime has increased over the past couple of seasons, though. He made 21 starts in the Premier League last season and a further 10 appearances from the bench.
