Man City have sent a scout to monitor the man who produced an influential performance as Napoli inflicted a 2-0 defeat on rivals Liverpool one month ago – Fabian Ruiz.

The Spain international moved from Real Betis to Napoli in the summer pf 2018 for £25.5m in the summer of 2018, and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

His performances in the middle of the park earned him recognition in the Spanish international setup with the 23-year-old making five appearances since his debut in June 2019.

The versatile player, who has been likened to David Silva for his vision and expertise in possession has been previously linked with the elite tier of Europe’s clubs including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool.

But now it is Pep Guardiola’s side who have fired the first shot with the news that the Citizens have sent a scout to evaluate the player during their Wednesday night Champions League clash with Red Bull Salzburg.

Speaking last week on the prospect of Fabian departing Naples, Napoli chairman, Aurelio De Laurentiis, said (via The Guardian): “I paid €30m for Fabián and he’s a fantastic player. If some of the European top clubs were to offer €180m we can start talking about selling him.”

The Guardian report goes on to claim that relations between Napoli and Man City ‘took a turn for the worse’ after Jorginho’s aborted transfer to the Etihad in favour of a move to Chelsea, but that issue is not expected to hamper a potential move to Manchester should the club match Napoli’s valuation.
