Man City to table two-year offer to transformative transfer target

Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema Real Madrid v Atalanta March 2021

Sergio Ramos has emerged as a surprise target for Manchester City as he approaches the end of his Real Madrid contract, according to reports.

Ramos is a Real Madrid legend, having captained the club to a huge number of trophies. He has been in the Spanish capital since 2005, but now may finally be moving on. At the age of 35, he still has something to offer, but Madrid have been unable to convince him to sign up again.

The 2020-21 season was the first of his Real career in which he made fewer than 20 appearances in La Liga. Injuries limited what he could contribute and now Madrid may be moving on. They have been unable to meet his financial demands as they feel the affects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

With David Alaba having signed up at the Bernabeu, Real have already replaced Ramos, who will be a free agent this time next month.

The 2010 World Cup winner will still be in demand and there have been links with the Premier League. Chelsea and Manchester United would be among the suitors who could pay his wages.

But so could Manchester City, who haven’t been mentioned as a suitor – until now.

According to ESPN, City could try to sign Ramos this summer. Pep Guardiola reportedly admires his leadership qualities and sees him as an ideal reinforcement.

Barcelona are willing let Ronald Koeman leave in order to bring back Pep Guardiola as Manchester City turn their attention to Jack Grealish, while Arsenal and Brighton remain locked in talks over a potential swap deal, all in today's transfer chatter.

City have lost Eric Garcia to Barcelona and Aymeric Laporte is considering his future. Therefore, they could need more bodies at the back and Ramos would guarantee them quality.

With that in mind, they are prepared to offer him a two-year contract. That deal would include the option of a third year, which could be at sister club New York City in the MLS or still at the Etihad Stadium.

The length of contract on offer could be crucial, as Ramos wants a two-year deal. His current club Real only offer one-year extensions to players over the age of 30.

The Madrid defender will have talks with president Florentino Perez this week to come to a conclusion about his future with the club. But it seems City are more likely to meet his demands.

City ready to replenish

They may have won the Premier League and EFL Cup in 2020-21, but City are ready to make some major changes to their squad.

Sergio Aguero and Garcia have both left as free agents, each joining Barcelona. But there are players under longer contracts who could be sacrificed as well.

According to the Daily Mail, the likes of Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez could make way. The two wingers would both have a value of around £60m.

It was claimed that Arsenal could be interested in them, although it is unclear how they would afford them. In addition to their price tags, both are on contracts with big wages.

But if City can get them off the books, they can reinvest in other targets. Jack Grealish and Harry Kane have been mentioned as possible signings, for example.
