Man City to seal record deal for Maguire with huge salary
Manchester City are prepared to make Harry Maguire the world’s most expensive defender and pay a him a huge salary to boot, according to a report.
The Daily Mirror report that City are prepared to meet Leicester’s £80million asking price and that will surpass the £75million that Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.
City have also offered the England centre-back a staggering £280,000-a-week to quit Leicester and move to the Etihad – making him City’s second-highest paid player behind Kevin De Bruyne.
Pep Guardiola’s men moved into pole position for the 26-year-old after Manchester United stalled over meeting Leicester’s asking price.
United have apparently not given up on luring Maguire, who was a target for Jose Mourinho last summer, but they are understood to be a long way off meeting Leicester’s asking price.
City are hoping to complete a deal which will see Maguire step into the boost of departed skipper Vincent Kompany, who left at the end of the season to return to Anderlecht as player-manager.
Maguire only signed a new five-year deal with Leicester last September after United failed to prise him away from the King Power Stadium.
Now though City’s interest is too good to ignore and Maguire is understood to be keen to be given the chance to win some silverware with the champions.
Leicester are reluctant to sell the former Hull and Sheffield United man, but will not stand in his way if their price tag is met.
