West Ham exacted revenge on Manchester United as they knocked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men out of the Carabao Cup win a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.
After losing dramatically to United at the weekend, West Ham travelled north on Wednesday looking for a place in the EFL Cup fourth round.
And Manuel Lanzini put the Hammers on their way early on, and despite United’s control, they could not get back into the tie.
Dean Henderson made his first appearance of the season as Phil Jones was named in United’s matchday squad for the first time in 19 months.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made 11 changes from Sunday’s Premier League win at West Ham as David Moyes’ men arrived at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup third round.
Henderson started after recovering from prolonged fatigue following his positive Covid-19 test in July, with Jones among the substitutes.
Alphonse Areola and Alex Kral made their West Ham debuts as Moyes made 10 alterations, with Jarrod Bowen the only player to keep his spot.
West Ham started on the front at Old Trafford and took just nine minutes to open the scoring.
Ryan Fredericks all too easily ghosted between the returning Alex Telles and Jadon Sancho and cut back for Manuel Lanzini to sweep home.

United took control of the possession, but could not lay a glove on the visitors. Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek and Telles all had shooting opportunities but could not hit the target as West Ham went into half-time ahead.
Sancho fired right footed over the bar early in the second half after a superb pass into the area from Juan Mata.
Mason Greenwood appeared on the hour mark and after a fine run from deep he almost levelled. Areola though kept his sliced shot out after super control from the young striker.
Lingard, who scored the winner between the sides at the weekend, was next to go close with a shot from the edge of the box which Areola held.
With 15 minutes to go Sancho burst into the area on the left and saw a curling right-foot shot blocked from close range.
Sub Bruno Fernandes then dragged an effort wide of the left post from the edge of the box as United tried to turn the screw.
Arsenal and Man Utd target to command enormous transfer fee
Bayer Leverkusen will command upwards of £80 million for Arsenal and Manchester United target Florian Wirtz, as Anthony Martial is reportedly open to joining Spurs, while Mikel Arteta looks set to be backed in the transfer window again.
It was then Greenwood’s turn to create himself space on the right only to fire his low cross straight to Areola.
West Ham had a rare chance to seal the win late on but Andriy Yarmolenko hit the foot of the post after going around Henderson. And with United committing men forward Mark Noble found himself one-on-one but fired straight at Henderson.
Pablo Fornals then hoisted a shot high over the bar from the edge of the box as West Ham looked to put the tie to bed. But West Ham hung on to knock out Solskjaer’s men.
