Manchester United and Arsenal are observing the ongoing contract saga surrounding one Napoli star, a report claims.
According to Italian outlet Calciomercato.com, the Premier League duo are monitoring Dries Mertens’ negotiations over a new deal.
Mertens currently has a deal with the Naples side which runs until 2020, though chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis wants the Belgian to pen a fresh deal worth around £3.5million a year.
It has been claimed that the 30-year-old has a exit clause of just €30m, should an overseas club come in for him.
However, despite lengthy talks between the player’s representatives and the club, no agreement has yet been reached, which provides hope for interested suitors.
With the situation seemingly not nearing a conclusion any time soon, the report states that Arsenal and United could step up their interest ahead of the summer.
However, speaking to Premium Sport last year, the player insists he has no desire to leave the Neapolitans for England.
“I love this city and I love these people,” he said.
“There so many things I love about Naples: the sea, the coffee, everything. It’s nice to go around the city and have amazing things to eat, if you know the right places is an amazing city, that’s how you must live it.”
