Man Utd barge Liverpool, Arsenal aside with £55m bid in pipeline for Chelsea star Ten Hag adores

Man Utd are preparing a £55m bid to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea, according to a report – which has revealed the gap between their offer and the Blues’ demands.

Mount is about to enter the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge. So far, he has been reluctant to renew his stay with Chelsea, despite coming through their ranks. As an established England international, the midfielder has attracted attention from other Premier League clubs.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Mount, for example, as they aim to rebuild their midfield. Arsenal have also been considering a swoop for the 24-year-old.

But according to an update from the Daily Mail, Man Utd are now getting a bid ready so they can win the race for Mount instead.

Erik ten Hag is said to be a huge fan of the playmaker and is keen to tie up a deal quickly. In turn, Man Utd are ready to back him by making a £55m bid.

Should that offer fail, Man Utd would consider increasing it. According to the report, Chelsea’s asking price is actually closer to £85m.

Given the amount of time remaining on Mount’s contract, it is unlikely anyone would be willing to go that high. Hence, Man Utd are ready to test the waters before plotting the next steps.

Chelsea have decided they will sell Mount if they can’t agree a new contract with him. It is simply a question of how much for and where to.

Man Utd are interested because they want to add another midfielder to their squad this summer, regardless of whether or not they buy Marcel Sabitzer after his loan spell from Bayern Munich.

According to the report, Ten Hag has made Mount one of his main targets for the role. Therefore, the transfer talks are due to get underway.

Mason Mount might be nearing end of Chelsea journey

This season, Mount has played 35 times in all competitions. In the process, he has scored three goals and added six assists.

Across his whole Chelsea career, he has scored 33 goals and assisted 37 from 195 appearances.

However, after all the money they have spent on new players in the past two transfer windows, Mount feels like Chelsea have not made renewing his contract a priority, even though it is something they want to do.

Incoming head coach Mauricio Pochettino is an admirer of Mount and would ideally like to work with him. But if Man Utd swoop in early, as they seemingly intend to, the opportunity might be taken out of his hands.

Meanwhile, another midfielder with a different kind of profile that Man Utd are being linked with is Everton’s Amadou Onana.
