Mourinho rejected chance to sign Neymar, Mbappe and Bale

Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho turned down the possibility of signing Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Gareth Bale this summer, a report claims.

United have signed three players in the current transfer window thus far, with Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant arriving.

According to The Independent however, the Portuguese rejected interest in Mbappe, Neymar and Bale, among other marquee signings proposed by executive vice-chairman Woodward.

Miguel Delaney claims “there were more than a few meetings” where Woodward would pitch a player of such stature.

However, Mourinho rejected these proposals as he “has a clear vision” of what he wants his team to look and play like. He wants “hard-working wingers” and not “flamboyant wide attackers”.

Instead, the manager would rather concentrate on signing an experienced central defender, hence the interest in Tottenham centre-half Toby Alderweireld.

“One argument put forward by those close to Mourinho is that he can’t yet fully commit to more expansive football because he hasn’t had the defensive framework he fully trusts – because he hasn’t had centre-halves he fully trusts,” the article says.

Alderweireld is considering Mourinho’s top priority, but Maguire is reportedly being considered due to differences in the valuation of the Belgian.

To solve his perceived central defensive problems, Delaney even claims that Mourinho is considering moving Nemanja Matic back to centre-half.
