Manchester United and Chelsea are interested in Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar, according to reports.
Skriniar has been one of Serie A’s standout defenders since joining Sampdoria in 2016. After an impressive debut season in Italy, he earned a move to Inter.
The Slovakia international quickly established him at a higher level at San Siro as well. He played some part in all 38 Serie A games of his first season in Milan.
Skriniar has maintained his place at Inter, passing 100 appearances for the club last season. He has featured heavily again this term.
However, his future is now in question. Skriniar is happy at Inter, but is attracting admirers from elsewhere.
According to FCInterNews, two of his potential suitors come from the Premier League. Man Utd and Chelsea could both be expected to make moves for him.
United are on the lookout for a centre-back partner for Harry Maguire. Victor Lindelof has struggled for consistency, while Eric Bailly has suffered with injuries.
Skriniar would not come cheap either, but may be more affordable. The report claims he could be available for around €50m.
Sven: Man Utd need important defender
Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson says Manchester United need signings and should focus on a 'very good important' defender.
His intention is to try and renew his contract with Inter, which currently expires in 2023. However, it is not yet clear if he will be able to.
Therefore, either United or Chelsea could pounce. The Blues, for their part, want to find a younger partner for Thiago Silva.
The former PSG captain has made a positive impression since his move as a free agent in the summer. However, at 36, Chelsea know he is just a short-term solution.
The idea is that Skriniar could come in at Stamford Bridge as a centre-back partner for Silva. Then, when the time comes for the Brazilian to leave, Skriniar would be ready to assume the responsibility of being Chelsea’s main centre-back.
At 26 years old, Skriniar is approaching the prime of his career. Only time will tell if he spends his best years in Italy or in England.
Skriniar has already turned down Prem move
There was a chance that Skriniar could have moved to the Premier League last summer.
Tottenham were eager to sign him, and even sent representatives to Italy. However, they could not find an agreement with Inter over the asking price – and the player was keen to stay where he was anyway.
Spurs are said to retain an interest, but Inter’s valuation of Skriniar could thwart them again.
