Man Utd in clear as Liverpool ‘promote midfielder’ instead of signing Thiago

Thiago Alcantara

Liverpool look increasingly unlikely to fund a move for Thiago, with the agent of a forgotten midfielder claiming he will be handed a chance at Anfield instead.

The Spanish midfielder has entered the final year of his deal and looks likely to leave Bayern before long. He turned down a new deal in Bavaria, doing so at the final hour of negotiations.

There remains uncertainty over where his future lies, with several reports touting Liverpool as his next destination. However the Reds are unwilling to pay Bayern’s €30m asking price for a player in such a situation.

Reports last week claimed Liverpool had agreed a wages package with Thiago after making an opening bid for the Bayern star.

However, Marko Grujic’s agent insists his client has been told he has been promised a chance to prove himself this season. And with Jurgen Klopp already boasting a packed midfield – Gini Wijnaldum has also agreed to stay – a deal for Thiago looks less and less likely.

Grujic spent the last two seasons on loan at Hertha Berlin. But another loan move away, or even a sale, now looks to be off the cards for the Serbian.

“Liverpool want to keep him. That could change in January at the earliest,” Fali Ramadani told Kicker.

Grujic has shown his versatility while at Hertha. He’s operated mainly in central midfield but he’s also featured on the right, as an attacking midfielder and as a holding player.

And that flexibility is now being tipped by the Daily Mirror as a sign they won’t move for Thiago after all.

Liverpool’s decision not to sign the star would therefore give Manchester United a free run at the Bayern star.

Hoeness angry at Thiago ‘blackmail’

With United also strongly linked with midfielder, both clubs have been accused of “blackmail” by former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness.

Thiago Alcantara TEAMtalk

Speaking to Sport1, Hoeness reiterated that Bayern have received no official contact from any club about Thiago. However, he tipped Liverpool to make an underhand offer towards the end of the transfer window.

“It is a difficult situation,” Hoeness said. “A while ago we agreed on a new four-year contract. Some days later he said: ‘I’m looking for a new challenge.’ Which is totally okay.

“I think he obviously has an agreement with Liverpool or Manchester United or both of them. Now both clubs are bluffing, and no one has contacted Bayern Munich officially.

“From my point of view, that has no style. They’re trying to blackmail us, by waiting until the last week, when they’re going to make a cheap offer.”
