Man Utd clear-out mooted as Solskjaer makes room for new faces

Sergio Romero TEAMtalk

Reports claim Manchester United will start to offload players in January, with Sergio Romero, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones all vulnerable.

The trio appear to be at the top of the exit list, with Timothy Fosu-Mensah also under consideration to depart.

Romero, 33, has been at Old Trafford since 2015 but only ever acted as understudy to David de Gea. The Argentinian has made just seven Premier League appearances, with 61 in total for the Red Devils.

The former Sampdoria man has enjoyed 28 Euroepan outings but it seems his days at the club are now numbered. The fact that Dean Henderson is now waiting in the wings means it is unlikely he will see any action. The South American looked set for a loan move to Everton in the summer but talks broke down.

Defender Rojo moved to the Theatre of Dreams a year earlier than Romero. Never one to hold a down a regular starting berth, he has made just 76 appearances in the league.

He has not featured for United for more than a year and the writing appears on the wall.

Jones, at 28, should be in his prime as a defender but his career has been stalling for some time. Injuries have not helped and the man with 27 England caps now seems on the peripheries.

He does not appear to be in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans and hasn’t kicked a ball in anger this term.

The Manchester Evening News are reporting that the three players will be moved on in the winter window. Both Romero and Rojo are out of contract next summer, with Jones under contract until 2023.

Defender pondering options

Fosu-Mensah is also said to be considering his future in the north west. The 22-year-old’s United career has never really got going and he has played just 29 times in all competitions.

Spells at Crystal Palace and then Fulham helped him gain experience but he is now fighting for game time.

The Netherlands international did start for United against former side Palace. However, that is the limit of his action this term and rumours persist that he wants a fresh challenge.

Whether or not Solskjaer sanctions a move only time will tell but, like the other three, his future is uncertain. United’s under-pressure boss will see the January window as a way to strengthen his squad.

Things have not gone to plan early on and he may need to recruit some talent to appease the fans. That will mean exits and it would be no surprise to see the above stars jettisoned.
