Manchester United have tied young defender Axel Tuanzebe down to a new three-year deal, the club have officially confirmed.
The central defender, who is also comfortable at full-back, spent last season on loan at Aston Villa – where he impressed as the Midlands club regained their Premier League status after a play-off final win over Derby.
The 21-year-old is highly regarded at Old Trafford but that has not stopped Villa expressing an interest in signing the player on a permanent deal.
Tuanzebe will be taken on United’s pre-season tour of Asia and Australia and looks set to be given a chance to stake a claim for a starting berth next season, and his new deal confirms the club’s faith in him.
A statement on the club’s website reads: ‘Manchester United is delighted to announce that Axel Tuanzebe has signed a new contract, which will keep him at the club until June 2022, with the option to extend for a further year.’
Tuanzebe said: “I have grown up at Manchester United and it has always been a big part of my life and my family’s life. I appreciate the trust that the club has in me and I want to repay that with my performances on the pitch.
“I know I have a lot of hard work and learning ahead of me but the experience I gained throughout last season puts me in good stead for the future ahead. I am determined to give everything and show everyone the player that I can be.
“I can’t wait for the tour to get started and to see what the upcoming season brings.”
