Man Utd wish defender well as departure for Argentine giants is confirmed

Manchester United have completed the sale of Marcos Rojo to Boca Juniors, bringing an end to his seven-year stint with the club.

Rojo had been at United since the summer of 2014. However, he fell down the pecking order in recent years.

After spending the second half of last season on loan with Estudiantes, he failed to make a single appearance upon his return to Old Trafford.

Therefore, the club were looking to move him on – and they have now confirmed his departure.

As expected, Rojo has joined Boca Juniors back in his native Argentina. He moves for an undisclosed fee.

A club statement read: “Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has completed his transfer to Boca Juniors, for an undisclosed fee.

“The 30-year-old will return to his homeland on a permanent basis, after agreeing terms with the reigning Argentinian champions.

“Rojo had spent the second half of last season on loan with his first club, Estudiantes, before returning to United, although he played his final game for the Reds in November 2019.

South American football journalist Tim Vickery says Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo wants to return to Argentina to join Boca Juniors this January.

“Marcos arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in August 2014, making his debut for the club the following month in a 4-0 Premier League victory over Queens Park Rangers.

“He started at left-back in our FA Cup and EFL Cup triumphs at Wembley in 2016 and 2017 respectively, and also won the Community Shield and Europa League during his time with the club, missing the latter final against Ajax due to injury but playing a major part in our route to the Stockholm showpiece event.”

Rojo leaves a centurion

The statement continued: “In total, Marcos made 122 appearances for United, scoring two goals.

“Everyone at the club would like to wish him all the best for the future.”

Rojo was one of several players to leave United in January. Timothy Fosu-Mensah was another fringe defender to leave on a permanent basis, while there were loan exits for a number of others.

For example, Jesse Lingard joined West Ham for the rest of the season and Facundo Pellistri headed to Spain for a short stint with Alaves.
