Man Utd stand by apologetic Solskjaer and deny approach for successor

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer TEAMtalk

Manchester United have not approached Mauricio Pochettino about the prospect of succeeding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the club’s manager, sources close to the club have told TEAMtalk.

Reports emerged on Monday evening suggesting former Tottenham manager Pochettino was being lined-up to replace Solskjaer, who is coming under increasing pressure after United’s 6-1 home defeat against Tottenham on Sunday.

The Norwegian admitted the Spurs setback was his ‘worst moment as Man United manager’, but vowed to carry on in an effort to find a solution to his side’s increasingly alarming problems.

The Daily Star’s Jeremy Cross claim United “have sounded out Mauricio Pochettino about him replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as boss”.

The paper went on to report that “senior club figures have made contact with Pochettino’s camp”.

“It is embarrassing, I hold my hands up, it is my fault. It is not Manchester United,” said Solskjaer after the game. “You don’t win games by making individual mistakes, errors and a performance like that.

“It was nowhere near good enough. Today is the worst. I can’t say any more than that. When you have a defeat like this you have to look yourself in the mirror.”

Poch admirers

While Pochettino is believed to have admirers in the Old Trafford boardroom, the club are standing firm behind Solskjaer despite the club’s challenging start to the season.

An opening day defeat against Crystal Palace was followed by a fortunate victory against Brighton before the Spurs defeat left Solskjaer and his players reeling heading into the international break.

Yet it seems Solskjaer will be allowed to continue in his post for the foreseeable future, with new signing Edinson Cavani adding to his attacking options ahead of United’s next Premier League game against Newcastle on October 17.
