Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly drawn up an eight-man shortlist of potential centre-half signings after hopes of landing Toby Alderweireld were dealt a blow.
Mourinho is thought to be keen to add a new central defender to his squad this summer after Victor Lindelof struggled to adapt following his 2017 move from Benfica. The Swede has since been linked with a profit-making switch to Everton.
The Red Devils have been in discussions with Tottenham over a deal for Alderweireld but the two clubs are understand to be some way apart in their valuations of the Belgium international. Spurs are said to be seeking around £70million for the star, with United only willing to go as high as £55million.
And according to the Manchester Evening News, Alderweireld features on an eight-strong list of central defenders identified by Mourinho as possible solutions to United’s central defensive needs.
According to the paper, the others are Raphael Varane of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng, Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli, Inter Milan’s top prospect Milan Skriniar, Alessio Romagnoli of AC Milan, Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez and Caglar Soyuncu of Freiburg.
A centre-half recruit this summer would mean Mourinho has signed a central defender every summer since he took over at Old Trafford in 2016.
Eric Bailly and Lindelof between them cost £60million, while Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo are all understood to have been told by Mourinho they will still have a part to play next season.
