Man Utd given huge lift as Cavani tipped to announce decision ‘next week’

Edinson Cavani has decided to stay at Manchester United and could announce the decision next week, it has been claimed.

Cavani joined United in October as a free agent following his release by Paris Saint-Germain. He has brought experience and quality to United’s frontline. However, he only signed an initial one-year contract. Hence, there have been fears he could leave at the end of the campaign.

United can extend his contract by a further year but there have been rumours that Cavani could prefer to return to South America. Boca Juniors have been heavily linked with the Uruguay international, for example.

It seemed like that was the most likely outcome for Cavani’s future. But now he appears to have had a change of heart.

According to ESPN, the striker has now agreed to stay at United for another year. Cavani was unsure but is now ready to commit his future to the Red Devils.

An announcement could even arrive as early as next week, ensuring the 34-year-old continues his stint in England.

Former Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo says he would choose to stay at Old Trafford if he was in Edinson Cavani's position.

Cavani has made a positive impression at Old Trafford, scoring eight goals from 22 Premier League appearances, just 11 of which were starts. He put in an impressive performance in their 6-2 win over Roma in the Europa League semi-final first leg, scoring twice and providing two assists.

It emphasised just how good Cavani still is and how important it would be for United to keep him. Now, it appears they are close to doing so.

Solskjaer has made Cavani promise

Solskjaer Cavani TEAMtalk

Speaking after his performance against Roma, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised Cavani and revealed he was trying to convince him to stay.

“He was out for seven months and he’d not been playing football for a long, long time before he came to us,” Solskjaer said.

“He’s had his couple of injuries and he’s now worked really hard to get back fit and he shows his qualities.

“He knows my feelings. He knows that I’d love to him for another year.

“We have spoken about it. I understand this year has been very difficult but I’ve promised him that Old Trafford and Manchester is a different place with our fans in the stadium.

“He must try to get that feeling, to be on our side. Manchester is a fantastic place to live.

“I’m doing my best so let’s see. Of course nights like this, hopefully we can get to the final and hopefully he can see himself being here for another year.”
