Erling Haaland is being weighed up as a viable transfer target by Manchester United with officials reportedly concerned by their futile efforts to sign Jadon Sancho last summer.
Both players belong to German side Borussia Dortmund and after United ultimately failed in their bid to sign Sancho before the season started they are considering whether or not to pursue Haaland. The forward is widely believed to be a player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to be reunited with. Solskjaer has admitted “following” the 20-year-old. The pair worked together at Molde and Solskjaer flew out to try and convince Haaland to sign for United in January 2020.
That ended in failure with the Norway international signing for BVB where he has continued his rapid development.
Ed Woodward and John Murtough and Co are contemplating another effort to sign Haaland, who has scored 49 goals in 52 games for Dortmund since arriving from RB Salzburg. The Athletic though are reporting that United are unsure about the viable nature of a deal.
United pursued Jadon Sancho all last summer, but BVB were steadfast in their £108m valuation of the England winger. The Bundesliga side even placed a August deadline on any deal, ahead of their pre-season training camp. And as soon as the deadline passed without an acceptable offer from United, the ‘not for sale’ sign went up.
United are keen to avoid another fiasco, especially considering the large amount of money that will be in play.
Haaland has a €75m release clause which will become active in the summer of 2022. But with Dortmund struggling to make the Champions League the striker could well move on this summer for a fee well above that.
His agent Mino Raiola was pictured over a week ago attending meetings with Barcelona and Real Madrid. Manchester City and Chelsea are also understood to be keen on the 20-year-old, as well as United.
If Woodward decides against Haaland then second on the list is Spurs’ Harry Kane, per the source. United put a dent in Tottenham’s top-four hopes on Sunday and The Athletic say that is the minimum requirement for Kane to stay.
Tottenham’s asking price will be £120m though. While Daniel Levy is not understood to be willing to sell to a Premier League rival. That means that a deal for Kane would be very difficult.
That may lead to United going after Sancho one again. That is not completely off the table. Although Dortmund’s £108m asking price from last year would have to be lowered significantly.
United looking at Neves
Meanwhile, United have added a midfielder to their target list after his agent was asked to search for a sale, claims a report.
Solskjaer’s side have been linked with all manner of players and positions. The latest report indicated a blockbuster swap deal could be on the cards to solve their goalkeeping conundrum.
Now, according to 90min, a midfield talisman has been added to their list of targets.
They declare that Wolves’ Portuguese international, Ruben Neves, is in their sights. What’s more, the club appear likely to sanction his sale.
That’s because Wolves’ parent company – Fosun International – are said to be seeking to ‘restructure their commitment to the club.’
That is not as drastic as it sounds, but has led to Jorge Mendes being tasked with finding new clubs for some of his clients.
Neves, 24, is one such player, and will undoubtedly attract widespread attention.
