Man Utd add versatile Ligue 1 defender enjoying rapid rise to list of targets

Facundo Medina TEAMtalk

Manchester United have added Facundo Medina to their list of defensive targets, according to reports.

Medina is a 21-year-old defender who can play either as a centre-back or a left-back. He has risen to prominence since joining Ligue 1 side Lens in July 2020.

It is the Argentine’s first spell in Europe, and he is making the most of his new platform. Medina earned his senior debut for his country in October 2020.

The defender has started 10 games in Ligue 1 this season, making one further appearance as a substitute. He scored his first goal in French football back in September.

Medina is outlining himself as a player with potential, and for that reason, Man Utd have identified him as a possible target for the future.

According to RMC Sport, United have added Medina to their list of targets. However, he is not an immediate priority.

Nevertheless, United are keen not to lose sight of the youngster, who fits the profile of player they are looking for at present. As their pursuit of Moises Caicedo indicates, they are looking at the best young talent from around the world.

Medina is a little further down the line in his development, having already made the jump to a major European league. However, joining United would be a further step up.

Medina to help strengthen defence?

The Red Devils want more options at centre-back, despite being relatively well-stocked there at present. Medina would be a promising proposition in future, and could also cover for Alex Telles and Luke Shaw at left-back.

Worth just €3.5m when Lens signed him, the French club are now hoping they can turn a tidy profit on the River Plate academy graduate.

Medina remains under contract with Lens until 2024.
