David de Gea: Praised both Ibrahimovic and Mourinho

Manchester United fans responded with an overwhelming show of support for David de Gea when asked to vote for their Player of the Season.

Nearly 19,000 fans voted in the poll, with De Gea picking up nearly five times as many votes as his nearest challenger. Proof, if it were needed, that the fans have not held last summer’s ‘will he, won’t he’ transfer saga against him.

A last-minute problem with the paperwork saw De Gea miss out on his dream move to Real Madrid, but the Spain goalkeeper wasted no time in signing a new contract and throwing himself back into first-team action, saving United on several occasions this season,

While De Gea nearly left last summer, Anthony Martial was a name on everyone’s lips in terms of the ‘incoming’ side of the club’s transfer business – arriving as the world’s most expensive teenager from Monaco.

Questions were raised about the price at the time, but the fans certainly don’t have any complaints now, voting the Frenchman as their second best player this season.

His injury-time winner in last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final can’t have hurt his popularity, helping him to 15% of the vote – making him the only player apart from De Gea in double figures.

Marcus Rashford, meanwhile, was voted the season’s third best player despite not even making his senior debut until the end of February.

That debut was headline grabbing – two goals in a 5-1 win over Midtjylland – but it was that weekend against Arsenal where he really proved himself. Scoring two goals and assisting the other in a 3-2 win, the 18-year-old had fully arrived.

In the two months since, he’s barely slowed up. A crucial goal against West Ham paired with winners against Manchester City and Aston Villa have got United fans on the edge of their seats for what seems like the first time this season.

Centre-back pairing Chris Smalling and Daley Blind picked up a handful of votes each, with 3% and 2% respectively – a small reward for what has actually been a pretty solid season for United’s defence.
