Lone Man Utd star who’d ‘walk into Man City team‘ despite failings named

Prominent pundit Chris Sutton has picked out one Man Utd star who would “walk into this Man City team” despite his failures against the ‘top six‘ sides this season.

Sunday’s derby between Man Utd and Man City promises to be an intriguing clash despite the 14-point gap in the table.

Pep Guardiola’s men are expected to march on to the Premier League crown regardless of the result. Man Utd, on the other hand, still have work to do to secure a top four finish.

City have swept aside all before them after recovering from a slow start in the early going. Their squad depth is the envy of all Premier League managers. Furthermore, their starting eleven boasts half a dozen players who could stake a claim to be player of the year.

One Man Utd star who will be in the mix for that award is Bruno Fernandes, though Paul Scholes sees things differently.

Nevertheless, Sutton believes he is the lone Red Devil who would walk into the current City line-up.

That is despite the Portuguese’s startling lack of returns in matches against other members of the traditional ‘top six‘ this campaign.

Speaking in his column for the Daily Mail, Sutton acknowledged Fernandes’ underwhelming displays in big games, writing: “Apparently Bruno Fernandes doesn’t turn up against the Big Six. Seven games, one goal, no assists.

“But Manchester United’s masterful midfielder can’t do it all on his own.

“Fernandes has had an Eric Cantona-esque impact on the club and is the only United player who would walk into this City team.

“That is why he is scrutinised more than anyone else but he needs help. It cannot be that if Fernandes doesn’t turn up, United don’t turn up.

“He has scored once in those seven games – a penalty in the 6-1 defeat by Spurs – but that’s one more than his team-mates.

“Fernandes could do with stepping up, but so could the rest!”

Stopping City like “Whack-a-Mole”

Sutton continued: “United won’t have much of the ball on Sunday and may rely on the counter-attack. You don’t envy their task of preventing City from making it 22 consecutive wins.

“Stopping City doing their thing can be like Whack-a-Mole. You can snuff out one City player but another one will pop up.

“They’re constantly moving and rotating, and Kevin De Bruyne is the master of getting between the lines. To watch him in full flow is a treat.

“He is the great entertainer and, as a neutral, I just hope this match lives up to its billing. Let’s not have another bore draw, please!”
