Man Utd great details agonising Harry Kane decision as ‘legacy’ pitted against ‘great’ Real Madrid move
Manchester United great Dimitar Berbatov feels Harry Kane faces a “touch choice” between a “great” Real Madrid move and his Premier League “legacy”.
Kane’s future is up the air after a woeful season at Tottenham. Individually, the striker has been absolutely fantastic for the north London outfit this season.
The 30 league goals he’s scored this season is a tally he’s only reached once before. Indeed, he netted that figure in the 2017/18 campaign.
Last season, he bagged 17 times, in a Spurs side that finished fourth. As such, it’s a frankly ridiculous achievement that he’s managed to improve on that tally so much in a struggling side.
Tottenham’s woes have been well documented this season. They finished outside the top seven for the first time since the 2008/09 season.
They also saw the back of Antonio Conte, and then caretaker manager Cristian Stellini. Indeed, the club is in turmoil and without Kane, they’d be in a hole which would look very difficult for them to dig themselves out of.
They might be burdened by that situation soon. Kane is a target for Manchester United and Real Madrid and even if he doesn’t move this summer, his contract is up the following year.
As such, if neither of those sides snare him now, somebody will almost certainly do so next summer.
Berbatov details ‘great’ Real Madrid signing
Manchester United great Berbatov has detailed how he feels Kane would be a top signing for the Spanish giants.
“Kane would be a great signing for Real Madrid. He is a complete player, he can score goals, he can assist, he can drop deep, he can do everything. He has the quality and the experience to play for a club like Real Madrid,” he told EFE, quoted by Managing Madrid.
While he did not mention the potential of him going to United, that seems plausible, as he detailed the difficult decision between a move to Real and his legacy in England.
“But I also think that he loves Tottenham and that he has a strong connection with the club and the fans. He is the leading goalscorer of the team and of the country.
“He is on his way to break Alan Shearer’s record for most goals in the Premier League. His legacy now is so great that he cannot force himself to tarnish it.”
Indeed, Kane likely thinks that himself, which would make moving to United and staying at Spurs the only viable options. He’s reportedly identified a move to Old Trafford as the only one he would make.
“It is down to him to know what is important for him: his legacy with Spurs, which is unbelievable now, or personal records and winning something before he finishes playing football. It is a tough choice and only he can make it,” Berbatov added.
Kane to Real an expensive transfer
If Real were able to convince Kane to join, it would surely cost them a lot. A fee north of £100million has been mooted, and Berbatov suggests Spurs will definitely demand a big fee.
“Of course, it will cost a lot of money, because I know Daniel Levy and he will ask a lot for his star,” he said.
“It would be interesting to see it, because not many English players have left England, because the Premier League is probably the best league and everyone wants to be there.”
Indeed, Kane may be able to thrive in Spain, but a move abroad seems very unlikely with Shearer’s record in sight.
