Gary Pallister has told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to bring in a new central defender this summer – and has one name at the top of his list.
The Manchester United old boy has hailed the progress Victor Lindelof has made alongside Harry Maguire this season.
But he thinks the club still lack quality cover in central defence and has suggested Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake as a suitable investment.
Ake has also been linked with a move to former club Chelsea.
Pallister, however, hopes United come up trumps. He argues that even if they miss out, then signing a new centre-half should be a priority.
Pallister told Manchester United’s official Youtube channel: “Lindelof has had a really good season as well.
“I think after his first year we looked at him and thought, “Has he really got the physicality for the Premier League?”
“He’s not as dominant as Harry but I think he’s complementing him. He’s got the hang of the Premier League now, the physicality of it, the pace of it. I think he’s gone strength to strength.
“But I still think we need another big, powerful, dominant centre-half at the club.
“I think it’s one of the things you’d be looking at. If you get [Eric] Bailly fit and he gets a run of games there’s potential there. He’s a bit rash at times, but I think if Ole is looking at the squad.
“I think everyone has been talking about another dominant centre-half. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ole was looking in that direction.”
With reference to Ake, Pallister continued: “I like Ake. I think he looks the part. He looks a physically strong lad, he’s got pace, he’s not bad on the ball.
“He’s linked with City. They’re obviously looking for another centre-half, they’ve had problems at the back. So who knows.
“But he’s someone I’ve looked at at Bournemouth and I’ve been impressed by him. For me, he looks the part.”
Man Utd reignite Gabriel interest
Gabriel has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Ligue 1 over the past couple of years. His time in France could soon be up, though, as he is preparing for the next step.
That could bring him to the Premier League, where Everton had previously been close to a deal. Gabriel even went on a tour of their training ground before the lockdown.
However, the Toffees now face strong competition for the 22-year-old. According to The Mirror, Manchester United and Arsenal have joined the race.
There is also interest from Napoli, who may need to replace Kalidou Koulibaly.
