Man Utd hopes diminish further as Serie A side take pole in midfielder race

Juventus midfielder Emre Can will be allowed to leave this month – but AC Milan are more likely than Manchester United to be his next club, it is claimed.

Can has fallen out of favour under Maurizio Sarri this season, leading him to contemplate his future ahead of the upcoming Euro 2020.

The former Liverpool midfielder has been linked with a return to the Premier League via rivals Manchester United, but is believed to have turned down the opportunity due to his Anfield past.

However, Sport Mediaset (via SempreMilan) claim the prospect of him leaving Juventus this winter is not over, and AC Milan have leapfrogged United in the race to sign him.

Milan were interested in signing him in the summer, and having struggled to meet their usual standards this season, are looking for reinforcements.

They are now looking at Can again, meaning United’s ever-fading hopes of capturing his signature are decreasing again.

Can is not the only Man Utd target Milan are interested in snatching, with reports earlier in the week suggesting they wanted Dani Olmo from Dinamo Zagreb.

Milan are understood to have made a €30m offer for the playmaker, who had been linked with a move to Old Trafford to add extra creativity in midfield.

That may instead be provided by Bruno Fernandes, as their long-running pursuit of the Sporting CP star continues – but the Portuguese club still feel United’s offer is £13m short of his true valuation. Read the full story here.
