Manchester United have reportedly received a huge boost over their pursuit of Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane.
It’s common knowledge that Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to land a top central defender this summer.
A new striker is also on Solskjaer’s radar, but it would appear that he is closing in on Harry Maguire’s new partner.
United are expected to spend big on one of those positions, whilst trying to land a bargain on the other.
That bargain could prove to be Varane, as the France international closes in on a Bernabeu exit.
The 2018 World Cup-winner is under contract until 2022 but has no interest in penning an extension.
As a result, Madrid could be forced to sell him for a bargain rather than risk losing him for nothing.
Varane will have no shortage of offers, but Spanish outlet AS claims he has decided he will be happiest playing in England.
That news will certianly alert United and Liverpool, who have also been linked with the player.
However, a switch to Old Trafford appears much more likely, given that Jurgen Klopp will be overlaoded with centre-back options when Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez return.
The Red Devils have also been chasing Sevilla ace Jules Kounde and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly. But both of those options would cost upwards of £60million.
At this stage it’s unclear how much Real would demand for Varane, but it should be cheaper than that figure.

Calciomercato have covered the story and report that Ronaldo, who was mentioned as a target for United last summer, was open to a Turin departure.
However, United were apparently not keen on re-signing the 36-year-old and adding his mega-wages to their books. Read more…
