Manchester United have reportedly joined Leeds and Manchester City in the hunt for Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico this summer.
The Argentina star has established himself as one of the top left-backs in European football since swapping Independiente for the Dutch giants in January 2018. Indeed, the 28-year-old has chalked up 13 goals and added 19 assists in 138 games since his switch to the Eredivisie.
The defender only penned a new deal with Ajax in December. But while that took the expiry date of his terms to 2023, he will reportedly be free to find a new club this summer.
Indeed, the Daily Mail reported at the weekend that Ajax will not stand in Tagliafico’s way if he wants to seek a new challenge.
The newspaper added new information that he will also be available for a ‘knockdown’ £13million.
That is in contradiction to the report on TransferMarketWeb, who claimed that Ajax will demand €26m for the player.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reported interest is perhaps surprising, given Luke Shaw’s performances this season.
The England star upped his game after the arrival of Alex Telles last summer and has kept the Brazilian on the sidelines.
Brandon Williams also remains an option for the Red Devils, making the Tagliafico link a strange one.
At this stage, it would appear that Leeds will be the most in need of a new left-back.
Marcelo Bielsa’s men are set to lose Ezgjan Alioski at the end of the season. Leeds also prefer to play makeshift full-back Stuart Dallas in central midfield, so the move makes sense.
Man Utd to go all-out attack
Meanwhile, Manchester United have made a significant change to their transfer plans this summer, according to a report.
The news that Eric Bailly has penned a new three-year deal, with the option of another 12 months means that United’s priorities have changed. According to the Daily Telegraph, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskajer will now “have a clear run at trying to sign Erling Haaland and the best forwards in Europe”.
Bailly’s new contract came out of the blue on Monday. The Ivory Coast defender’s camp had been making noises about the 27-year-old’s unhappiness at Old Trafford. The former Villarreal man was said to be upset at his lack of match action.
Bailly will now be looking to displace Victor Lindelof as Harry Maguire’s defensive partner.
Per the report, Solskjaer’s hunt for a centre-back is now not a priority. The Norwegian will hang his hat on Bailly and instead look to go all out for attacking signings this summer.
Haaland is at the top of Solskjaer’s wanted list. But the Norway striker is wanted by a number of other clubs too. Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho are also options that United have on their wanted list. And moving for one of those targets has been “made easier” after Bailly signed up.
