Man Utd ‘keeping tabs’ on Champions League semi-finalist as Tottenham spy signing of star with point to prove

Fikayo Tomori and Mike Maignan

AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori could be given a second chance in the Premier League by either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur, a report has claimed.

Tomori left English football behind him when leaving Chelsea for AC Milan in 2021. It turned out to be an inspired choice by the centre-back. He earned a permanent transfer after an initial loan spell, going on to win Serie A in his first full season there.

However, there is a feeling that Tomori has suffered a lack of recognition back in his own country for the way he has revived his career.

Soon, he could have a chance to prove his doubters back home wrong. According to a detailed report by the Daily Mail, Tomori is on the radar of Man Utd and Tottenham.

Man Utd are said to be ‘keeping tabs’ on him because of uncertainty about the future of club captain Harry Maguire. Victor Lindelof is considering an exit too, which means they may need more competition for Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

A new arrival at centre-back could become the long-term successor to Varane, who has suffered some injury issues during his Man Utd career and is about to turn 30.

However, Tottenham are also keeping an eye on Tomori. They may well have a greater need for him than Man Utd. Their defence has come under serious scrutiny during what has been a turbulent, if not entirely disastrous, season.

For either of Tomori’s suitors to sign him, though, they would have to tempt Milan with a ‘huge offer’, the report says. After all, the Rossoneri have him under contract until 2027.

Tomori might increase England chances with Premier League return

Given how settled he is with the Serie A side, the only motivation for Tomori to return to the Premier League might be if it boosts his chances of getting more caps for England. Currently, he only has three to his name; he missed out on a place in the World Cup squad despite his impressive form over in Italy.

Recently, Tomori helped Milan reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they will meet cross-city rivals Inter. They saw off Tottenham in the round of 16, with Tomori starting the second leg in north London.

On that occasion, Milan kept a clean sheet. Spurs might have liked what they saw from the 25-year-old specifically.

Whether they would be able to compete with Man Utd for Tomori – since they appear less likely to qualify for next season’s Champions League than Erik ten Hag’s team – is another matter.

The likely outcome this summer will probably be for Tomori to stay at Milan. During his time with the club so far, he has made 98 appearances, including 36 this season.

It would be a shame if he never gets the chance to show what he is really capable of on a regular basis back in the Premier League, though. Therefore, the likes of Man Utd and Tottenham might be wise to keep looking at him in case he does become available.
