Manchester United will trigger a year extension in Phil Jones’ deal, but will then listen to offers for the defender, a report claims.
Jones will see his current deal expire next summer, however United have the option of extending for an extra 12 months.
According to an exclusive from the Metro, the Red Devils tend to prefer to discuss new deals with players before triggering any extensions, but this time it may be different.
They state that United intend to activate the club option in the coming weeks, and will then open up the table for offer for the 26-year-old.
The report goes on to claim that Mourinho is an admirer of Jones and likens the former Blackburn defender to John Terry.
Mourinho was reportedly ‘furious that the club failed to sign a centre-back last summer’, however his ‘lack of options are unlikely to be a reprieve for Jones’, the Metro states.
Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling appear to be Mourinho’s first choice pairing for the time being, though he is believed to have prioritised a centre-back signing in January.
