Carragher on why Man Utd, Liverpool move for Sancho is ‘no brainer’

Jamie Carragher understands exactly why the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United will be busting a gut to sign Jadon Sancho this summer after hailing the Borussia Dortmund winger as one of the best young players in world football.

The 19-year-old has blossomed in Germany and is now a full England international with 11 caps and destined for a place in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad.

The attacker has scored 15 goals this season with 17 assists from his 29 appearances, on the back of 13 goals and 19 assists last season for BVB.

The winger has regularly been linked with moves to both United, Liverpool and Chelsea and those reports look set to up a notch after Sky in Germany went big on claims that Sancho will leave Dortmund this summer.

Sky in Germany reporter Jesco von Eichmann said: “He will leave Dortmund this summer, that’s for sure.

“It’s not clear to which club he will change.

“Manchester United is one of the big clubs that are interested, that I’ve heard.

“Michael Zorc, the director of Dortmund, said last week in an interview that he hasn’t had an offer for Jadon Sancho yet. Today, I asked him again, and he just smiled!

“There will be some offers for Sancho in the future. He is improving. He was very tired at the end of the first part of the season but now he’s very fit and performing very good. He improved his behaviour.

“He had some trouble coming in on time – he came more or less late every day. He changed that and he is really improving.

“He is working hard in training so (head coach) Lucien Favre is pretty happy with him right now.

“I guess he thought over some things in the winter break and now he is working like the professional that he wasn’t before.”

Reports on Thursday’s Paper Talk claimed Liverpool were also keen to land Sancho this summer, though the winger’s preference was a move to Old Trafford.

Speaking on the Sky Sports Football Weekend Preview Podcast, Carragher says the move is a no-brainer for any Premier League club.

“Sancho is one of the best young players at the moment in world football, especially when you look at his actual stats for Borussia Dortmund,” Carragher said.

“He’s an English player who I think will be desperate to come back, so I think he’ll be the hottest thing everyone in the Premier League will be looking to bring in.

“Will he be a hit? I think so. It’s a no-brainer, look at how well he has played in a top league with a top club under pressure. He’s playing week in, week out, his numbers are fantastic and his age is just perfect.”

Carragher on why Sancho will be the next Sterling

Carragher reckons that because of his age and his links with Manchester City, it’s easy to draw comparisons between Sancho and fellow England forward Raheem Sterling.

And the Sky Sports pundit insists who signs the player will have a major star on their hands for the next decade.

“I think he’ll have his pick of top clubs in the Premier League, and though the fee may look eye-watering, I think it’ll be one of them that over time will look cheap. You’re going to get a good player for 10 years there if you keep him at your club.

“If you think about the development of Raheem Sterling at Manchester City, it feels like something similar could happen. It feels like he could be the next Raheem Sterling in terms of goals and assists numbers.”
