£80m Man Utd centre-half Harry Maguire has come under attack by former Dutch star Rafael van der Vaart in a bizarre rant.
The 27-year-old has established himself as a key part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backline this season.
His displays have been influential in Man Utd’s recent unbeaten run, though a few notable errors have occurred along the way.
The latest, came in the club’s 5-2 victory over Bournemouth. Maguire appeared slow to adjust his feet as Junior Stanislas nutmegged him, before drilling a firm shot inside David De Gea’s near post despite the extremely acute angle.
That incident sparked an empassioned response from former Spurs playmaker Van der Vaart,
Speaking on Dutch TV station Ziggo, Van der Vaart said: “I think Maguire goes home every day and tells his wife: ‘I screw up, but I earn so much.
“They really believe I’m good.’ I really think so, he laughs at everyone.”
The verbal volley was not the first time Maguire has come in for criticism from the Dutchman.
Speaking via the same platform following Maguire’s display versus Liverpool earlier this season, Van der Vaart quipped: “If he is worth so much money, Virgil van Dijk is worth £300m.
“If I am going to play with the amateurs on Sunday afternoon, I can easily find three who can do this (what Maguire does on the pitch).
“I mean that seriously. A bit silly to say, but I really think so.”
Meanwhile, Man Utd chiefs are reportedly confident that a rarely seen defender can go on to emulate club legends Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
