Man Utd come to massive Harry Kane decision as bargain option leaves Ten Hag chasing potential over proven commodity

Manchester United have reportedly officially ended their interest in signing Harry Kane from Tottenham, feeling the money it will take to lure the England skipper to Old Trafford is completely unrealistic.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has made the prolific Spurs frontman his top target this summer but fully understands that United cannot go past a certain point when it comes to the transfer fee and the overall package for a 29-year-old, who has just a year left on his contract in north London.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy remains desperate to keep hold of the club’s talisman, hoping that Kane will actually agree a new contract rather than leave on a free transfer next summer.

But with Kylian Mbappe once again emerging as a realistic target for United again following his decision over his own contract at PSG, the need for pursuing an interest in an aging Kane has diminished.

Indeed, Napoli frontman Victor Osimhen also remains of interest to United but he, too, is likely to be out of their reach.

The reigning Serie A champions are understood to want around £130m for the 24-year-old striker.

That leaves United potentially looking at cheaper options instead and one of those options is Atalanta forward Rasmus Højlund.

The Dane has enjoyed an impressive first season in Italy after joining from Austrian side Sturm Graz.

The 20-year-old scored nine times in 32 league games and United are impressed with the potential he’s shown. However, he’s not considered a regular starter at Old Trafford, despite the fact that Atalanta value him at around £50m.

Opening Mount bid knocked back

United, meanwhile, are also looking to improve their midfield but have seen an opening bid for Chelsea star Mason Mount knocked back.

The Red Devils are said to have offered £40m for the England star, whose contract runs out next summer, but it’s likely to take nearer to £60m to get a transfer over the line.

Ten Hag is known to want more dynamism in midfield and he admires Mount’s athleticism, pressing and versatility.

He is not the only one though, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Bayern Munich all monitoring the player’s situation too.
