Barcelona have told Ivan Rakitic that they won’t be improving his contract this season and may have to wait until next campaign to be offered better terms.

The Croatia international, who played a starring role as his country got to the final of the World Cup, has been heavily linked over the summer with a move to the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu spoke to radio show El Transistor‘ about Rakitic’s future and claimed that the club would have to wait to offer Rakitic a new deal.

“This season we will not be able to make the gesture that Rakitic is asking of us,” Bartomeu said. “Next season we can look at it in relation to new revenue.”

Rakitic even reportedly turned down a move to PSG as he showed loyalty to the Catalan giants and will be disappointed by the latest news.

The 30-year-old joined Barcelona from Sevilla in 2014 for a reported £17million and has since been a key player for the club.

The midfielder recently told Mundo Deportivo: “I already have a contract here that is valid for a few more years.

“Hopefully, we can extend it. I have a lot of desire. I want to enjoy every training and every game and show that they can have confidence in me.”

Rakitic’s mood will be soured further with news that Bartomeu has confirmed that the club are in talks to renew Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets’ contracts.
