Man Utd scouts sent with Euro 2020 brief with €70m bid pending

Nuno Mendes Portugal v Israel TEAMtalk

Manchester United and Manchester City will have scouts watching Nuno Mendes at Euro 2020 over the next month, claim reports in Portugal.

Mendes is a familiar name to fans of the Manchester clubs, the 18-year-old has been linked with a move to England for some time.

Mendes is one of the hottest prospects in European football, having enjoyed a rapid rise since stepping into senior football last summer. He has already established himself as first choice at Sporting, making 35 appearances last season.

Portuguese champions Sporting though have Mendes under contract until 2025. There is a also a €70m release clause in that contract. And such is the high regard for Mendes, Record believe they will not sell him for anything less.

That could lead Sporting to wait for January to cash in on their young international

Unless of course, Mendes stars for Portugal at the Euros and scouts from the Premier League pair, plus Real Madrid push for a summer deal.

O Jogo via Sport Witness report United, City and Madrid are all interested and will send scouts to analyse his performances in the 24-team tournament.

The report says City are best placed to sign Mendes as they could use Pedro Porro in a part-exchange deal.

United had been reported as the favourites to land Mendes previously. Indeed, it was reported last month that the player’s agent had flown in for talks.

The Red Devils are actively looking to bring in the best young talent from around Europe. Mendes is viewed as a player to eventually challenge Luke Shaw. However, with Alex Telles already in situ it’s unlikely that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees a new left-back as one of his summer priorities.

That of course could change if Mendes puts in a stellar showing at Euro 2020.

The BBC report that United have had a £67m bid for England winger turned down by Borussia Dortmund.

It’s understood Dortmund, who placed a £108m valuation on the 21-year-old last summer, want closer to £77.5m, with an additional £4.25m bonus payment on top.

Reporter Simon Stone also suggests Dortmund want the fee over a maximum of four years. United had planned installments over five years.

It has left United John Murtough mulling over his next move and whether to up their offer.

Meanwhile, Sport1 report that United have officially registered their interest in the Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman as an alternative.
