Man Utd leader reveals collective squad view on ESL – ‘We share the same opinion’

A Man Utd veteran spoke of a “victory for football” when declaring what the collective view of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad was regarding the European Super League.

European football was rocked last weekend when news broke of a proposed breakaway league. Backlash was almost unanimous, with pundits and fans in particular voicing their extreme displeasure. Two days later, the pressure told as the rogue competition folded amid multiple teams pulling out.

Man Utd were one club at the heart of the controversy, with the developments driving a wedge further between fans and the Glazer family.

Joel Glazer delivered a grovelling apology through an open letter, though Avram Glazer was clearly in no mood for sale talks judging by his sharp, two-word response.

A group of disgruntled fans took to Carrington in protest on Thursday, leading to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s intervention.

Per the Mirror, one player who also helped to quell the unrest was Nemanja Matic.

The 32-year-old’s playing role has diminished in recent years, though his presence as a leader remains as strong as ever.

Now, speaking to Sky Sports (via the Mirror), Matic has revealed the Man Utd squad’s collective condemnation for all things ESL.

“The first information that came to us was on Sunday after the game,” said the Serbian.

“What I can say is that on behalf of all players, we are happy that all clubs listened to the supporters. I think this was a victory for football.

“We all share the same opinion – we are all with our supporters. I think that was the better decision for football that we don’t go to that Super League.

“That’s all I can say, because I didn’t know much about the Super League.”

Fernandes desperate to play alongside Leeds sensation

Meanwhile, Man Utd midfielder Fred has revealed that Bruno Fernandes has not stopped talking about Raphinha since he signed for the Red Devils – and would love to link up with the Leeds United man one day in the future.

Brazilian winger Raphinha has scored six goals and added six assists in 26 league games since joining Leeds last summer. His performances have lit up the Premier League and seen him hailed as one of the signings of the season.

Such has been his form, he’s been linked with a number of big-name European clubs. There’s been English interest too, with Manchester United and Liverpool also apparently keen.

And it seems the Red Devils’ star man Fernandes would love to link up with his former Sporting teammate again one day.

“Bruno’s been talking about Raphinha ever since he arrived. They played together at Sporting,” Fred told the official Manchester United website.

“He’s a great player having an amazing season and a lot of clubs have their eye on him. I met him recently, great guy, excellent player, but I hope he won’t be lining up against us! [laughs]

“I wish him a quick recovery and a lot of success in his career. He’s a stand-out star player for Leeds so, of course, it’s better for us if he’s not on the pitch.

“If he does play, we’ll look to mark him carefully and work on our game-plan as best as possible. We’ll try to nullify his threat to come out on top in this game.”
