Man Utd offer Dean Henderson big incentive to snub Chelsea interest

Dean Henderson Sheffield United TEAMtalk

Manchester United have reportedly offered goalkeeper Dean Henderson a new £100,000-a-week contract to fend off interest from Chelsea this summer.

The 23-year-old is currently on a season-long loan deal with Sheffield United where he has been in superb form for a Blades, who currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, right in the mix for European football – if the season is finished.

The consistent performances of Henderson are believed to have attracted the interest of Chelsea, with Blues boss Frank Lampard unhappy with the high-profile errors 25-year-old stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga has made this season.

However, in order to ward Chelsea’s interest in Henderson, United have offered him a new contact.

According to The Sun (via the Sunday Express), the Red Devils want to give Henderson a pay rise and take his wages to over £100,000-a-week.

The England Under-21 keeper, who was in line for a call-up to the full squad before the Coronavirus struck, has kept 10 clean sheets in 27 appearances for the Blades this season.

Only Burnley keeper Nick Pope has more blanks to his name, with 11, and Henderson is equal with Liverpool’s Alisson and Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel.

The report adds that United do view Henderson as their long-term number one, but are not yet prepared to move on from David de Gea just yet.

Their determination to keep Henderson at Old Trafford is backed up by the fact that this would be the fourth contract he would sign for United – despite having never played for the club.

Henderson’s last contract, which he signed in 2019, keeps him at the club until 2022.

However, the report claims this latest deal would see him having to commit for at least one more additional year on top of what was previously agreed.

For their part, Sheffield United are keen to have Henderson on loan for a third straight season -something that would fit nicely into United’s strategy for the player’s long-term future.

However, Henderson may decide that he does not want to wait for De Gea to leave and is ready to take on the number one role at a top-six club – giving Chelsea hope that a move could actually materialise.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are believed to be interested in signing Federico Chiesa from Fiorentina this summer, according to reports emerging from France. Read more…
