Toby Alderweireld: Not thinking about leaving

Manchester United will offer Spurs a defender of their own in order to get a deal for Toby Alderweireld over the line, according to a report.

The Red Devils are apparently keen on signing a quality centre-back this summer, with Harry Maguire, Yerry Mina and Jerome Boateng also linked with a move to Old Trafford.

United boss Jose Mourinho is understood to have prioritised a move for Alderweireld before Thursday’s 5pm deadline as it would be easier to pull off so close to the end of the window.

The Belgium international has just one year left on his deal at Spurs, but that hasn’t stopped Tottenham reportedly demanding a huge £55million to let him leave this summer.

As a result, ESPN claim that United may offer central defenders Chris Smalling or Marcos Rojo to Spurs in order to make the operation cheaper.

The Daily Mirror reported recently that United are not prepared to go above for £40million for the 29-year-old despite Mourinho’s desperation.

With time running out, the defender suggested last week that he could be forced to stay at Tottenham for the final year of his contract, adding to Belgian outlet HLN: “I will return to London this weekend for the start of pre-season with my club.”
