Man Utd outcast will be allowed to run down his Old Trafford deal

Ander Herrera TEAMtalk

Ander Herrera will leave Manchester United at the end of the season, according to a Spanish paper.

Bilbao’s leading daily newspaper El Correo reports that the Spanish midfielder will be allowed to run down his contract and leave on a free transfer next July.

Herrera, 29, has found opportunities hard to come by so far this season since the arrival of Fred, and he has started just once – in the EFL Cup defeat to Derby.

There have been no indications from United that they are preparing a new deal for Herrera, who has made just two sub appearances in the Premier League and whose deal runs out next June.

Last month ESPN reported that Herrera would reject the chance to move on a free Barcelona in order to stay at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard has always stated his desire to stay at Old Trafford, despite links with Italian giants AC Milan.

“I want to be here next season and unless the club sack me, I will be here in pre-season and fight to keep adding games to my total,” he said in The Guardian in the summer.

But the Spanish report suggests Athletic Bilbao will make an offer for Herrera to return to the club he left for United in 2014.

Herrera will be able to speak to clubs from abroad in January and will have to decide whether a return to the Basque country is on his agenda.
