Manchester United players are reportedly fully behind the club’s move for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s priority signing in 2022.
The Red Devils had a very active summer transfer window, bringing back club legend Cristiano Ronaldo, along with experienced centre-back Raphael Varane and England winger Jadon Sancho amongst others. However, a defensive midfielder remains high on Solskjaer’s list of priorities and that is where United are looking to upgrade next.
A long-standing interest in West Ham star Declan Rice is expected to facilitate a significant offer sometime in the near future.
And, according to the Daily Express, United’s current crop of England players are keen to get Rice on board.
The 22-year-old has made an outstanding start to the new season, coming off his strong showings at Euro 2020.
Indeed, Rice appears to be developing his game at a rapid rate. He looks more dynamic going forward and is also scoring goals – notching twice in the Europa League this season.
United want Rice on board to allow Paul Pogba to play further forward alongside Bruno Fernandes. However, there are also doubts over the long-term future of the France star, who continues to be linked with an exit.
A report in the Independent adds that Rice is actively looking for a way to quit the Hammers. But the major spanner in the works is the £100m valuation that West Ham have on him.
Whether United would be prepared to pay that sort of fee remains to be seen. But if Rice’s trajectory continues to trend upwards, then they might have to bite the bullet to get their man.
Maguire in line for new Man Utd deal
Meanwhile, a report claims that Manchester United are set to offer defender Harry Maguire an improved contract despite his current deal having nearly four years to run.
The 28-year-old is now in his third season at Old Trafford after the Red Devils paid Leicester City £80m in 2019. It seems money well spent as the England centre-back played every minute of the club’s 2019-2020 Premier League campaign. He was on track to repeat the feat last term before injury struck towards the end of the campaign.
The Sheffield-born stopper is currently sidelined after starting six of United’s seven league games this season. And he has also had to miss the current England games due to a calf injury.
Maguire has 39 Three Lions caps to his name after making his debut in 2017. He is clearly valued by both club and country.
The former Hull City centre-back is under contract at the Theatre of Dreams until the summer of 2025. But The Mirror are reporting that club bosses want to extend that deal while offering him better terms.
They want to ensure he is paid in line with new signings such as Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees the ex-Sheffield United star as a leader in the dressing room and he continues to deliver on the pitch.
