Man Utd will aim to pull a fast one over bitter rivals Liverpool by swooping in for long-time Reds target Thiago Alcantara, according to reports.
The Spaniard, 29, has been the subject of continued speculation regarding his next career step.
The Bayern midfielder made it clear he would be on the move this summer after refusing to pen a new deal with the European champions.
For the longest time, Anfield appeared to be the likeliest destination, though Jurgen Klopp’s side have yet to lodge an official offer.
Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge recently confirmed the classy midfield maestro is likely to leave, stating: “It looks like he will leave us.
“It was important for him that he showed that he can play well in the big games.
“When it comes to that, it’s a finish that hurts a bit. I expect an offer for him in the next few days.”
However, Old Trafford could now be Thiago’s next home, according to The Sun.
The speculation stems from the journalist’s tweet that read: “I’m told that United – in addition to Van de Beek – are interested in Thiago.”
The Red Devils’ long-standing efforts to sign Jadon Sancho remain ongoing.
However, should the plug be pulled on their pursuit, more than enough cash to be able to sign Thiago would be freed up in the process.
Solskjaer intervenes in midfielder hunt
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly personally intervened on a transfer deal for Donny van de Beek.
The Ajax star is one of the top names on United’s wishlist, despite Tottenham, Real Madrid and Barcelona also being linked with a £49million move.
The Red Devils want to bring in another creative midfielder this summer to provide competition for Bruno Fernandes.
Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira are both expected to move on, with the pair struggling for game time last season.
