Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has set his sights on Portugal midfielder Joao Mario and a swap deal could be on the cards, according to a report in Italy.

Mourinho has identified Inter Milan midfielder Joao Mario as the man who can add some power to his midfield, according to Il Corriere dello Sport.

The 24-year-old has made 11 Serie A appearances this season, making five assists, but the player has struggled to live up to expectations at the San Siro.

He arrived for €40million from Sporting CP in August 2016, but Inter are understood to be prepared to sell the attacking midfielder.

Mourinho tried to do business with Inter in the summer after identifying winger Ivan Perisic as the man he wanted. Inter though refused to sell the player for any less than the €55million price tag on his head.

United baulked at the fee and the Croatian eventually signed a new deal with the Nerazzurri, however that has not put off the United boss who wants to make an approach for Joao Mario.

The report claims Manchester United have reportedly offered Juan Mata in exchange for the Portuguese star, who is under contract until 2021.

Inter however are not keen and would rather sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan instead, but given the number of swap deals that actually come to fruition, it looks a long shot.
