Manchester United are ready to go back in for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier in the summer, according to reports.
The England international has been on United’s radar for quite some time, stretching back to the days when Jose Mourinho was at Old Trafford.
However, Dier’s fortunes at Tottenham have not got much better since the Portuguese tactician arrived in London, making just five Premier League starts under his new boss – with none yet coming in 2020.
Friday’s papers speculated that Spurs were ready to cash in on the 26-year-old at the end of the season, with Aston Villa potentially offering him an escape route.
But according to Saturday’s edition of the Daily Star, Manchester United are also considering a move for Dier.
It is claimed that United are attracted by Dier’s versatility, given that he can also operate as a centre-back, and believe they could tempt him away from Tottenham.
The Red Devils are bracing themselves for bids for Paul Pogba – whose agent has given a more than subtle hint towards a return to Juventus – and although Dier would not necessarily be a like-for-like replacement, he would provide them with the added depth they would need in the event of a departure for the Frenchman.
Given that Dier is out of contract in 2021, and is hesitant over signing a new deal, Spurs may have to sell him in the summer if they are to make any kind of money from him.
