Man Utd revive interest in unsettled Juventus winger as Sancho alternative

Douglas Costa TEAMtalk

Manchester United are lining up a move for Juventus winger Douglas Costa amid stern comments Borussia Dortmund about Jadon Sancho’s future, according to reports.

United have been chasing Sancho all summer, but Borussia Dortmund are refusing to let him leave for less than €120m. That’s a price that United are not willing to pay; and although they will continue to pursue a deal, they have missed the deadline that the selling club had set.

Indeed, Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc made those reports concrete by insisting at a press conference on Monday that the 20-year-old would be playing for the club next season.

Dortmund’s pre-season training camp begins on Monday, and they wanted Sancho’s future resolved by then. Despite him being in the UK over the weekend, it was not to sort out a transfer to United.

Reports indicate that United are £10m away from Dortmund’s estimation of what the initial fee for Sancho should be. The Premier League giants want to structure the deal with add-ons, but have disagreed over how much they should pay upfront.

Therefore, as the transfer window progresses, the Red Devils may have to look for alternatives. And according to reports in Italy, the answer may come from Juventus.

The Serie A champions have just replaced Maurizio Sarri with Andrea Pirlo as coach, and it is not the only change they will be making this summer. Juventus want to reshape their squad, and have identified five players they are willing to let leave.

One of those is Douglas Costa, and according to Tuttosport, he is on United’s radar as an alternative to Sancho.

The 29-year-old made just seven starts in the 2019-20 Serie A season, having fallen out of favour under Sarri. He is unlikely to have a future under Pirlo, either.

Despite never playing in the Premier League before, Costa has suitors in the English top flight. The report adds that Man Utd are “above all” in the hunt for him.

Reports back in April suggested that Juventus were willing to offload Costa to United. There was hope from the Turin giants that they could use Costa as a makeweight to lure Paul Pogba back.

Pogba’s future appears to be at United now, though. Besides, the other player Juventus were said to be offering, Miralem Pjanic, has since moved to Barcelona instead.

But United could reignite their interest in Costa as a deal in its own right. The Brazilian has pledged his commitment to Juventus in the past, but the Italians are now looking to move on.
