Man Utd revive interest in €60m Atletico star as missing piece in midfield

Manchester United could make a move for Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez to complete their midfield, a report claims.

United are enjoying one of their better seasons of recent years, so are on the lookout for reinforcements who could help them sustain a title challenge next season.

The impact that Bruno Fernandes has had since his January 2020 move has shown United the benefits of investing in the right players. Now, there are claims they have identified the next player who can take them up a level.

According to Todofichajes, United could revive their interest in Saul.

The Red Devils wanted to sign the Spain international last summer, before the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted transfer activity across the globe.

With United focusing their attention on Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, they did not have the funds required to pursue Saul as well.

In the end, they signed neither. Both could be back on the agenda at the end of this season, though, with new claims emerging about Saul.

Todofichajes claim that United will be willing to offer Saul a contract worth €165,000 per week for five seasons. They must convince Atletico to sell first, though.

Atleti have Saul tied down to a contract until 2026, with a €150m release clause. The report suggests they would listen to lower offers in the region of €60m, but only if the player tells them he wants to leave.

The ideal window of opportunity for United to negotiate would be between the end of the season in May and the start of Euro 2020 in June.

Saul flattered by United interest

Saul already knows United could be interested in him, after reacting to praise from Rio Ferdinand last year.

In September, the Atleti star said: “I am very flattered that a club like Manchester United or other teams that ask about me take me into consideration, for me it is very positive.

“And that strong people in those clubs speak well of you means that I am doing things well at Atletico Madrid.”
