Player of interest revealed, as Man Utd scouts visit favourite haunt again

Darwin-Nunez Benfica September 2021

Manchester United scouts are often seen visiting Portugal and now the subject of their interest has been revealed.

According to A Bola, United’s entourage were back at Benfica this weekend and a striker is their main focus.

The paper claim the scouts were present “precisely with the mission of spying Darwin Nunez”.

Previously it had been suggested that United were keeping track of the 22-year-old Uruguayan striker. But unlike in their previous visits, when Nunez impressed, he was apparently below par on Sunday.

Benfica lost 1-0 at home to Portimonense and Nunez was far from impressive, in stark contrast to recent displays.

United officials are believed to have watched the player at least twice this season and on both occasions he scored twice.

One of those games was against Barcelona in the Champions League last week, while previously they watched Nunez hit a brace against Boavista last month.

January exit for Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani 'teased'

A January exit for Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani has reportedly been 'teased' by an individual close to the player, with more updates on PSG's Marco Verratti and midfielder Paul Pogba.

Up until now though it had been unclear exactly who United were watching.

Left-Back Alex Grimaldo is another player who has been linked with a move to the Premier League. A Bola though are sure that Nunez is the man that United are tracking.

Brighton interest in Nunez

Journalist Andy Naylor of the Athletic claimed Nunez was a target for Brighton over the summer. The forward netted 14 goals last season after his £21.8m move from Almeria in Spain.

This season he has scored six in eight games for the Portuguese giants. However, he missed a number of chances on Sunday with  newspaper Record, via Sport Witness, saying he had “more will than head”.

Nunez has now departed for international duty with Uruguay, where he will team up with Man Utd striker Edinson Cavani.

Whether or not United’s apparent interest will be discussed between the two remains to be seen.
