Man Utd, Spurs miss out as Atletico prepare to pounce for Spanish talent
Atletico Madrid are favourites to sign highly-rated Spanish playmaker Dani Olmo from Dinamo Zagreb, according to reports in his homeland.
Olmo starred for Spain’s Under-21 team in the European Championships this summer, helping the nation claim their fifth Under-21s title in the process.
His performances sparked interest from all across Europe, with Man Utd and Tottenham the Premier League’s most interested suitors.
Though the Red Devils failed in their efforts after reportedly having a £23.5m bid rejected for the Spaniard, interest around Europe remained high with three other European powerhouses entering the mix.
Now a report from Spanish publication AS claims that Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid are the team most likely to succeed where all others have failed thus far.
According to the report (via The Mirror), Atleti have been ‘tracking’ the player and ‘have already held talks with the player’s agent, Juan Manuel Lopez’.
Last month, Olmo told Spanish media outlet Sport that: “I’ve always said that I wanted to return to Spain, it would be nice, but we’ll see what happens.
“I’m not ruling out any team. Out of respect to everyone who is interested in me, I’m not going to say anything.
“You have to respect them all.”
Atletico have also brought in Joao Felix and Kieran Trippier this summer; the former Tottenham man already earning himself the plaudits of both Simeone and the Spanish media.
