Man Utd swoop in for cheaper Serie A wing target as contract talks stall

Manchester United have registered their interest in AC Milan attacking midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, according to reports in Italy.

Calhanoglu joined Milan in 2017, but is out of contract next summer. Therefore, the Serie A side have a decision to make about his future.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, talks over a new contract with Calhanoglu have “stalled” – prompting interest from several sides in the Premier League.

Manchester United are one of those, and have made a call to ask about the Turkey international. Attracted by his low asking price, United have put him in their “notebook” of potential targets.

Of course, Jadon Sancho has been the top target for United this summer. However, they have missed Dortmund’s deadline to purchase the England winger.

Therefore, while they have not given up hope of signing Sancho, they are scouring the market for alternatives. Recent reports indicated that Douglas Costa, Kingsley Coman and Ousmane Dembele are among their options.

It has since emerged that United are still keeping tabs on Barcelona starlet Ansu Fati as well. Should their pursuit of Sancho fail, they have set aside up to €100m for Fati.

A much cheaper option, though, would be Hakan Calhanoglu. The 26-year-old has featured either as a winger or a more central attacking midfielder in his three years at Milan.

That versatility could appeal to United, especially when coupled with a valuation that is “non-astronomical”.

Calhanoglu’s negotiations are unlikely to pick up until the end of August, as the player’s entourage are in Germany and Milan technical director Paolo Maldini is also on holiday.

While those talks are on hold, several Premier League clubs and Bundesliga have come forward with an interest.

The Milan attacker is coming off the back of his most prolific season in Serie A. Calhanoglu scored nine league goals in 2019-20 – including six after lockdown. He also provided the same number of assists, with eight of those coming after the resumption of the league in June.

Earlier in 2020, Calhanoglu was linked with a number of different Premier League clubs. Reports suggested he could have replaced Christian Eriksen at Tottenham in January, for example, while Arsenal also reportedly had the chance to sign the now-26-year-old.
