Man Utd to look elsewhere as Niklas Sule transfer announced by Bayern’s rivals

Borussia Dortmund have announced the signing of Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule and he will join the club in the summer.
Manchester United had been heavily linked with the centre-back, who is out of contract in June. He will then become a free agent, and as such Chelsea were thought to be contenders for his signature, Newcastle have also been touted as holding an interest.
However, BVB have always been keen on the 26-year-old and they have announced they have agreed a deal with the Germany international.
Sule has penned a four-year deal and will join up with Dortmund in July.
“We are pleased that we were able to sign a German national player in Niklas Süle and retain him for four years,” said BVB sporting director Michael Zorc.
Sebastian Kehl, who will succeed Zorc in the summer, added: “Niklas has shown us in personal discussions that he is very interested in Borussia Dortmund. He has a lot of experience, calmness in the build-up game and the necessary physique to take the next step with us from the summer.”
Sule’s agent Volker Struth revealed last week that his client wanted a new challenge away from Bavaria.
Struth said: “We never negotiated. There was only a verbal approach.
“We met, spoke about it and I signalled at the time that the player was considering whether he wants to extend his contract. It wasn’t about the money at all.

“A conversation was planned in January. Niklas spent Christmas with his family, called me between at the time and said: ‘I don’t want that anymore. I don’t want this appointment to take place.’

Maguire issue
“It has nothing to do with money at all. I spoke to Hasan Salihamidžić about a possible renewal, that was in late autumn last year — six or seven months before the end of his contract. By then Sule had already decided and told me: ‘I want to do something different’.”
Despite signing Raphael Varane last summer, United are understood to be looking for a new centre-back.
Harry Maguire has not managed to get anywhere near his best form for United. After an impressive Euro 2020 campaign for England Maguire has struggled at Old Trafford.
The United skipper has recently returned to the team. A chest injury had forced him to miss the defeat to Wolves and the FA Cup win over Aston Villa.
The former Leicester man, who was an £80m recruit, has a contract until 2025, with the option of another year.
