Man Utd to trigger Inaki Williams £81m release clause – reports

Manchester United aren’t planning to wait around to replace Romelu Lukaku, with sensational reports emerging of a move for Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams.

It could be a busy deadline day for United, with any big-money move for a new forward dependant on the sale of Lukaku.

The latest reports suggest that the Belgian striker is set to sign for Inter, so Ed Woodward and co. will have to act fast if they’re to bring in a replacement before the transfer window deadline, 5pm on Thursday.

Juventus’ Mario Mandzukic and Lyon’s Moussa Dembele had both been linked but are set to stay where they are. Williams is the latest name to emerge.

Spanish TV station El Chiringuito has suggested that the forward, with a reputation as one of the fastest players in Europe, could be a due a move to the Premier League giants.

The 25-year-old, who has one cap for Spain, scored a career-best 12 goals for Athletic last season, including a lightning-quick solo effort against Sevilla (above) that attracted attention from all across Europe.

His profile would fit the bill for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is said to be targetting pacey, energetic and hard-working players.

But Athletic Bilbao, who famously only sign players from the Basque region, tend to be stubborn operators in the transfer market due to their limited capacity to bring in replacements.

As was the case with Aymeric Laporte, who was sold to Manchester City for a reported £57m, the club would only allow the player to leave if his release clause (€88m, equivalent to £81.3m) was activated, in which case they’d have no say in the matter.
