Man Utd told to brace for smack in the face over reported defender bid

Eden Hazard, Raphael Varane Villarreal v Real Madrid November 2020

Manchester United should prepare for instant rejection if they plan to bid £40million for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, a report claims.

The Daily Mirror claimed on Friday that the Red Devils plan to make the offer this summer. The Frenchman remains a firm part of Madrid’s plans, but uncertainty has shrouded his future. He only has one year left on his contract, with reports also claiming that he could leave this summer.

The Manchester Evening News has said that, for now, United have opened initial dialogue with Varane’s camp.

Nevertheless, if they make their £40million bid, AS (via Sport Witness) that club chiefs should prepare for a rejection.

The Spanish outlet claims that the figure lies ‘far from’ the €70million (£60million) Madrid have valued him at.

As a result, United would have to increase their bid by £20million if they are to tempt Los Blancos officials.

The MEN adds in its report that Varane has noticed a discrepancy between Madrid’s offer of an extension and his own demands.

AS claims that he has therefore made up his mind and wants to leave this summer. Madrid do not want one of the world’s top defenders to leave for free at the end of next season.

Transfer Chatter: Man Utd search for new defender, Tottenham fight for Boateng

Man Utd have devised a three-man shortlist for a new defender while Monaco have joined Tottenham in the chase for Jerome Boateng.

As such, they could be forced to accept a slightly lower figure than their original demands.

United are reportedly after a new centre-back to be the long-term partner for Harry Maguire. The Red Devils’ drop in quality without his presence was laid bare in Thursday’s defeat to Liverpool.
