Manchester United have been told that they may have to pay as much as €100million to land a major defensive target, a report claims.

Milan Skriniar is regarded as one of the top young central defenders in European football and is at the opposite end of the age range of another major Mourinho target in Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin.

The Inter star has been outstanding since moving to Milan from Sampdoria for €20million in the summer of 2017, and helped the Nerazzurri qualify for the Champions League last season.

Now, a fresh report from the Manchester Evening News claims that Jose Mourinho was interested in Skriniar in the summer, but decided against the move due to the £75m valuation that Inter placed on him.

They go on to claim that Nerazzurri boss Luciano Spalletti has raised his price tag to €100m (£88m) – and that Skriniar will not be allowed to leave for less.

An £88m fee would mean that United would break the current world record transfer fee for a defender, breaking the £75m Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk.
