Man Utd, Tottenham beaten in race for PSG star as bargain deal revealed

Tottenham and Manchester United appear to have missed out on a defensive target, as Thomas Meunier has reportedly agreed to join Borussia Dortmund.

Meunier is out of contract with Paris Saint-Germain at the end of June. At 28 years old and having won 11 honours in his career, he has been expected to be one of the most in-demand free agents this summer.

Reports had suggested that the right-back could make his way to the Premier League. Tottenham failed to sign a replacement for Kieran Trippier last summer, so Meunier could have filled an important role there.

The fact that Meunier is an international teammate of Toby Alderweireld also appeared to be in Spurs’ favour. Alderweireld recently committed his own future to Tottenham by signing a contract extension.

Tottenham were not the only interested party in England. Manchester United and Chelsea were reportedly beginning to express an interest in Meunier.

However, Bild report that the Belgian international has now agreed to join Borussia Dortmund. Meunier is set to sign a four-year contract in Germany.

Although the Ligue 1 season ended early, Meunier still could have stayed with PSG for the Champions League in August. However, he has decided against this, accelerating his move to Dortmund.

While the announcement has not yet been made official, it is expected to be confirmed within the next few days.

Meunier to replace Hakimi?

Meunier’s impending move could offer a hint to the future of Achraf Hakimi. The 21-year-old is nearing the end of a loan at Dortmund from Real Madrid, and his next destination is unclear.

Hakimi could return to Madrid to fight for his place. If he moves on, though, several Premier League sides are interested in him.

Reports have suggested that Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea have made enquiries. While Dortmund are still thought to be keen on keeping him, their potential acquisition of Meunier may reduce their need.

Hakimi is not just admired in the Premier League, though. In fact, the club Meunier is leaving, PSG, have also been mentioned as potential suitors.

Inter Milan and Juventus are also believed to be in the hunt.
